Japanese Smart Toilet Vulnerable to Hackers
Picture this: You're relaxing on the commode with a good book and the encouraging sounds of Wham!, when without warning you feel the whirl of the toilet flushing or the squirt of the bidet.
It could be a simple technological malfunction, or perhaps the sneaky doing of voyeuristic hackers.
The Satis smart toilet, available in Japan for a whopping $4,200, is reportedly susceptible to cyber-attacks via a hard-coded Bluetooth PIN vulnerability. According to a Trustwave SpiderLabs security advisory, anyone within range of the waste-disposal system can gain access to its control functions.
A hacked toilet may seem harmless, but that's because your john doesn't come with an automatic lid, built-in sound module, air purifier, or in-bowl spotlight. A vulnerable Satis unit, if infiltrated, could run up the household energy bill (though anyone willing to shell out $4,000-plus for a toilet can probably afford an excessive electricity tab).
Not to mention the paranormal fears associated with what may appear to be a haunted washroom.
There have not yet been any reported cases of Satis toilet hacking, but Trustwave SpiderLabs warned of what might happen if one is compromised.
"Attackers could cause the unit to unexpectedly open/close the lid, and activate bidet or air-dry functions, causing discomfort or distress to the user," the security firm's advisory said.
Trustwave SpiderLabs said it has made various attempts to contact toilet-maker Lixel, with no success. As of Aug. 1, no patch has been issued to update the toilet's Android software.
The My Satis app is available for free download in the Google Play store, for toilet owners to record their daily "defecation situation" and control the high-tech machine's tunes and other capabilities.
Lixel did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.
