Any attempt to write the history of hacking, to chart the rise and fall of hacker groups, their Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), electronic magazines ("ezines" or "zines") and fantastic exploits across the globe is going to be incomplete. It has to be, as hacker history is being re-written almost daily, the curiosity and drive of the hacker forcing them always to find new techniques to explore, new technologies to master. Covering the whole of the history of hacking and the computer underground would take up the whole of this book, so I won't even try. Instead here are a few highlights, some well-known events, the odd famous hacker, some zines and groups who made their mark on hacker history.
If you want to discover more, I recommend that you explore the history of the computer underground using the resources that are covered in Chapter 14: Learning More, any back issues of 2600 or PHRACK you can get your hands on, the LOD/H technical journals, the Computer Underground resources at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and any of the files floating around on the net. Maybe if you investigate further you'll find all the rest of the stuff left out here from lack of time and space: the rank and file hackers, the local hacking groups and short-term zines who keep the scene alive and who are busy planning their hacking exploits for the 21st century.

With the spread of microcomputers, and the birth of the BBSs (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/BBS), large amounts of teenagers were allowed access to computers for the first time. Some BBSs developed "elite" sections, where trusted members exchanged warez (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Warez) - pirated software. This is where the term "leet" comes from. Leet (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Leet) is a written-only dialect which first developed on the BBSs, probably to defeat obscenity-censoring filter programs. Phone phreaking (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Phreaking) became popular among BBS users, since it allowed phreakers to connect to BBSs in other area codes without paying huge telephone bills.
In 1984, 2600 (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/index.php?title=2600&action=edit), the "hacker's" quarterly, launched. Its name comes from the 2600 Hz tone used in certain phreaking (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Phreaking) exploits.
Although the BBS "hackers" had little actual contact with the older hacker cultures, they did know of it, and used the name hackers themselves in their criminal (or at least youthfully irresponsible antics). To protect themselves from the negative publicity, old-school hackers tried to apply the term crackers (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Cracker) to computer criminals, but with no great success.
Another event that sealed the hacker-as-criminal idea in the minds of the mundanes (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Mundane) was the Morris sendmail (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Sendmail) worm or Great Worm (http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Great_Worm) of 1988.
